Home Degree Discovery Day

One day.
Three university-style workshops.

A single day in which students take part in three university-style workshops, and come away with a much clearer sense of what they want to study.

Discover What It’s Like to Study a Subject

The decisions students make at the end of Year 11 shape their degree options years later, and they are usually made before students have any real experience of the subjects in question. Giving every student meaningful exposure to the full breadth of options within school hours is difficult to manage in-house, however committed the team.

Degree Discovery Day is a single day that does exactly that: three university-style workshops in a pathway of the student's choosing, built around real problems to work through rather than talks to sit through.

How The Day Works

Students spend the day experiencing university study in their pathway of interest.

Choose a pathway

Select from Science & Technology, Humanities & the Arts, or Social Sciences, based on your interests.

Three seminars

Take part in 3 university-style seminars, each built around a different subject & an engaging academic question.

The University Challenge

The day ends with a cross-pathway quiz, bringing together students from different rooms to pool their learning.

Three Pathways, Nine Seminars

Students pick one pathway and attend three back-to-back seminars. Pathways run simultaneously, and schools can offer one or all three.

Science & Technology

Build Your Own Organism. The systems that make up organic life take many forms — explore them by building your own.

From Atoms to Inventions. Master the atomic structures of everyday items and build your own inventions from scratch.

The Physics of Everything. Model projectile motion and predict the motion of anything from planets to toy cars.

Humanities & the Arts

How Much Is Your Life Worth? A working session in moral philosophy, testing what actually justifies the value we place on a life.

Who Decides What’s a Crime? From deterrence to rehabilitation, design your own prison in accordance with differing philosophies of criminal justice.

Decoding the Ancient World. Understand Homer’s Odyssey and develop your own interpretation of the classic narrative.

Social Sciences

The Economics of Theme Parks. Explore supply, demand and price elasticity by building your own theme park.

How to ‘Steal’ a Car. From theft to self-defence, use real case law to defend and prosecute your clients.

Wargames and Trade Deals, Play It Your Way. Navigate trade deals and conflict to grow your country and forge alliances in an interactive simulation.

Experience University Teaching from Subject Specialists

Subject specialists in every seminar

Each session is led by a tutor from our network of more than 2,000 vetted Oxford and Cambridge graduates who specialises in the subject being taught.

Designed to simulate university learning

Seminars reflect the discussion, questioning, and problem-solving students can expect at university, giving them a genuine feel for studying the subject at a higher level.

Informed by 25+ years of admissions research

Since 1999 we have led original research into how the most selective universities choose their students. That insight shapes how these sessions are designed.

Focused on discovery

Degree Discovery Day gives students the space to explore unfamiliar subjects, test their interests, and develop a clearer sense of what they may want to study in the future. The focus is on subject exploration rather than admissions advice.

What Students Say

“The material sciences session interacted with my critical thinking skills and deepened my knowledge of elements like tungsten.”

“Seeing the science sections explained at a higher level, and how approachable the staff were, gave me a much better idea of what I want to study at uni.”

“I most enjoyed the international relations sessions, and how they stretched ideas across multiple disciplines.”

Student Resources

Every student leaves with:

Curated reading list

Books, articles, documentaries, and podcasts tailored to the subjects they attended.

Reflective journal

A personal record of insights and next steps to guide their subject and degree choices.

University pathways guide

A-level routes, top universities, and career destinations for each subject explored.

Provision You Can Evidence

Every school that books a Degree Discovery Day receives an information pack mapping the day against the frameworks you are accountable to:

  • The Gatsby Benchmarks
  • The personal development and wellbeing strand of the Ofsted framework
  • Expectations around provision for high-attaining students

It sets out the intended outcomes, what students take away, and how the day supports your careers and enrichment programme, so the case is already made when you take it to your senior leadership team.
