Real Student Examples

Every package is built around you — your test, your timeline, and your tutor. Here are two examples of how a package is put together for a real applicant.

Example Package 1

Julia is applying to study Law at Oxford and needs to sit the LNAT. She books a four-hour package six weeks before her test date. Here is an example of how her sessions are structured.

Session One: an initial session with her tutor, an Oxford Law graduate, identifying Julia's weaker areas — in particular, constructing timed essay arguments under pressure in Section B, which she works on independently before her next session.

Session Two: focused practice on Section A comprehension questions, building her speed and accuracy across the multiple choice section using past LNAT papers completed as homework between sessions.

Session Three: a detailed review of a full timed mock Julia has completed independently, with her tutor providing feedback on her essay structure and argument quality.

Session Four: a final refinement session targeting the specific weaknesses identified across the package, leaving Julia with a clear strategy for test day.

Example Package 2

Gabriel is applying to study Engineering at Cambridge and needs to sit the ESAT. He books a twelve-hour package eight weeks before his test. Here is an example of how his sessions are structured.

Session One: an initial session with his tutor, a Cambridge Engineering graduate, identifying Gabriel's strengths and gaps across the Maths, Physics, and Chemistry modules before any timed practice begins.

Sessions Two to Four: structured tuition targeting Gabriel's weakest modules, working through problem types he is most likely to drop marks on, with papers from OA's full mock exam bank completed as homework between sessions.

Sessions Five to Eight: review of timed section practice completed independently between sessions, with detailed feedback after each to track improvement and adjust focus where needed.

Sessions Nine to Twelve: targeted refinement sessions based on full mock exams Gabriel has completed independently, leaving him with a clear strategy and the confidence to perform on test day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Admissions tests are exams used by many UK universities as one way of measuring the quality and potential of their applicants. They are designed to assess academic ability and aptitude beyond what grades alone can show, helping admissions tutors identify candidates likely to thrive on a particular course. Formats vary considerably from one test to another: some focus on subject knowledge, others on problem solving, critical thinking, or written communication, and each is tailored to be relevant to the demands of the course it supports. Depending on the subject and university, a test might be sat before you apply, after submitting your UCAS application, or close to the point of interview.

A test offers something the rest of the application cannot: a standardised measure taken under the same conditions by every candidate, regardless of school or background. This helps tutors assess skills relevant to the course, such as problem solving, critical thinking, or subject aptitude, in a way that is consistent and comparable. Used together, these different elements allow universities to look beyond grades alone and form a more rounded view of who is likely to thrive on the course.

Because places are limited and large numbers of applicants meet the academic entry requirements, universities need additional ways to distinguish between strong candidates. Admissions tests sit alongside the rest of the UCAS application, including predicted and achieved grades, the personal statement, the reference, and, where relevant, an interview.

An admissions test gives universities a standardised measure that is the same for every applicant, regardless of school or background. Tests such as the UCAT and the BMAT route for medicine, the LNAT for law, and the various Oxbridge tests (ESAT, TMUA, TARA and others) are designed to assess skills relevant to the course, for example problem solving, critical thinking, or subject aptitude, rather than knowledge a student may simply have been taught. For some courses a strong test score is very important and can directly affect whether an applicant is shortlisted or invited to interview, and in a few cases it carries significant weight in the final decision.

Oxbridge Applications is the global leader in Oxbridge admissions consulting, with over 25 years of experience supporting students into Oxford and Cambridge. Our admissions test packages are led by Oxbridge-educated tutors with direct experience of the specific test you are sitting — not generalist tutors working from a textbook.

Our packages are built around your individual needs, giving you focused one-to-one tuition that targets exactly where you are losing marks. Based on our research and experience, our tutors can help students get clear answers to questions like these:

  • Which areas of the test should I be prioritising in my preparation?
  • Where am I currently losing marks and why?
  • How do I approach question types I have never encountered before?
  • How should I structure my remaining preparation time before test day?
