The big day has finally arrived for those of you taking A-levels. Everyone in the Oxbridge Applications’ team has been reminiscing about how they felt on results day, and how we approached the next steps towards our respective university applications, so I thought it would be helpful to share some of our advice
1. Don’t lose sight of your dreams
You need to be really passionate about your choice of degree in order to put in the required work to make the best possible application and – above all – convince the university that you are worthy of serious consideration. Remember, you will be spending the next 3 to 4 years of your life living in college/halls of residence, in a given town or city, and studying the same discipline, so you need to ensure that you can make a real commitment to a Faculty and university.
2. Student debt?
The media has been full of stories over the past 2 years about the level of student debt which future graduates will incur under the new system of tuition fees. Without wishing to downplay the importance of taking the financial side of Higher Education into account when making the right decision for you, don’t let it be the only issue you consider. When it comes to applying for a graduate job in 5 years’ time, employers will value a strong degree from a top university and, for many professions, it will be a prerequisite for their application processes. You should also consider whether or not you will regret applying to university. Remember, it’s not all about exploring your chosen subject further, but also about experiencing a different way of life, meeting new people and having fun!
3. Your next steps
If you did better or worse than you expected following today’s announcements, and would appreciate some guidance, remember that you can pick up the phone to a member of the Oxbridge Applications team or drop us an email. And, don’t forget that you can book in for a Private Consultation if you want to discuss your queries in more detail. Private Consultations are conducted by me, Rachel Spedding (Director), Jane Welsh (Director) or James Uffindell (Company Founder), so we are always happy to meet you and your parents here in our office in Mayfair, or via Skype.
