For many applicants, the dream of Oxbridge is something they pursue from a young age.
The skills needed for Oxbridge, namely academic creativity, curiosity, and intellectual flexibility, can be cultivated over time – not necessarily just in the few months before the application.
For this reason, we offer bespoke support for Oxbridge applicants who wish to begin early preparation. Each year, 25% of the applicants who seek our support are preparing for Oxbridge more than a year in advance of the application deadline. To support this large group of students, we offer preparation tailored to building their confidence and academic ability for the subject they are applying for.
How to Prepare for Oxbridge in Year 10 and 11
This outline can be tailored to focus on areas where you feel you would benefit from extra support.
At this stage, we recommend students make a realistic assessment of their academic ability. On average, applicants to Oxbridge achieve at least seven to eight A* GCSEs – though this isn’t a formal prerequisite for applying.
Use mock exams as a guide to find out how achievable these grades are.
Begin thinking about A-Level choices and what subject combinations are useful for different undergraduate degrees – for example, Further Mathematics is important at least to AS Level for Physics, Engineering or Mathematics.
Achieving strong GCSE results will put you in good stead for an Oxbridge application, particularly as government reforms to A Levels mean students won’t sit public exams until the second year of the sixth form – so these will be grades Oxford, in particular, will look at.
GCSE Results Day will provide you with the opportunity to realistically assess your suitability for Oxbridge. If you haven’t achieved the high grades you wanted, prepare to show marked academic progress in your first year at sixth form.
How we Support Younger Students
If you are considering applying to Oxford or Cambridge as a year 10 or year 11 student, there are two key questions to consider:
1/2
1) What actions can I take now to position myself as a strong applicant?
2/2
2) How can I prepare for Oxbridge alongside preparing for my GCSEs and AS Levels?
We work with students and their families in a Private Consultation to provide answers to these questions, taking account of your individual qualities and the idea of success when offering you a strategy for preparation going forward.

Private Consultation
In a Private Consultation with year 10 and year 11 students, our Oxbridge-graduate consultants will focus on providing an application strategy which is measured and consistent in the lead-up to the application deadline.
Students in year 10 and year 11 benefit from the fact that they have time to dedicate themselves to their application without compromising their school work or having too much preparation to fit in, which is something our consultants take into account when providing a preparation strategy.

In a one-to-one interview environment, we will assess a student’s communication, subject-knowledge and potential to study their subject at university using real past interview questions.
Parent Consultation
Following the mock interview, we will ask the student to leave the session in order to discuss their performance with the family. This is also a chance to ask questions you may have about any aspect of the application process.
Evaluation and Next Steps
