Don’t be an Oxbridge ostrich

Decisions, decisions, decisions. It seems the everyone (or at least, parents and teachers) is expecting answers from you – and it’s always tempting to bury your head in the sand, ostrich-style. Interestingly, ostriches have Pliny the Elder to thank for this. It’s probably based on mistaking ostriches putting their heads down to feed, but it’s partially based too on the idea that ostriches are “stupid” – assuming that if they can’t see their attacker then they can’t be seen, and, in fact, ostriches do lie low to hide from predators. Unfortunately for the ostrich, it has a relatively underdeveloped, small brain so is less likely to cope with novel environments, unlike humans.
