The Difference between Online and Offline Interviews

Online and Offline interviews will require slightly different techniques and therefore preparation processes, with each kind of interview having its own benefits and drawbacks. For example, whilst interviewing at home mean that applicants won’t need to put in potentially hours of travelling, instead staying in a comfortable and familiar environment, for some interviewees finding a quiet space at home and getting into an academic mindset from home can be tricky compared to interviewing from within a Cambridge college or department itself. It is worth remembering, however, that tutors are still looking for the same academic attainment and passion regardless of the interview format, so any preparation you may have done so far will not be wasted!

For some online interviews, you may need certain apps or technologies (such as an online whiteboard), as well as videoconferencing software (Zoom) to conduct the interview successfully. Be sure to check the department and college website for guidance on what technology you will need. Additionally, we recommend making accounts, logging in, and testing out all software you plan to use during the interview beforehand to avoid any nasty surprises!

Tailor Your Preparation to the Interview Format

Given the differences between the formats, it’s well worth taking note of what interview format the college you’re applying to is using and preparing accordingly. Whilst having good online or in-person interview technique is certainly less important than the actual content of your interview, if you’re going to prepare, you may as well make it as close as possible to the real thing.

Whichever format of interview you will have, the fundamental principles of preparation remain remain the same. You should showcase your passion for your chosen subject, demonstrate critical thinking skills, and effectively communicate your thoughts.

To assist you in your preparation, we have curated comprehensive subject-by-subject guides to online Oxbridge interviews. These guide covers various aspects of the interview process, including tips and tricks specific to the online format. It provides valuable insights on how to present yourself confidently, tackle challenging questions, and make a lasting impression on the interviewers.

For Online interviews, the key distinction in preparation is technological set-up. Make sure you’re well practised using a computer or laptop, have a quiet space in which to do it, and have any writing materials you may need to hand. Additionally, you should register for and log into any apps or softwares you will need for the interview well in advance of the day itself.

The same goes for in-person interviews: be sure to practise face-to-face with friends, parents, or teachers to ensure that you’re comfortable sitting in a room with others and answering questions on the spot.
