What is the CLT?

The CLT is a one-hour test which is taken on the day of the interview. The test doesn’t need to be registered for specifically; if you’re invited to interview, the college from which you receive your invitation will send through the details of test arrangements closer to the time. The test itself is one hour in length and consists of a single essay question, for which you’ll have the choice between three different options. The questions usually differ from one another and between years in terms of their format, but all of them hinge on asking you a question or provisioning a statement that provokes a debate for you to discuss in the essay itself. The point of the test is to determine your abilities to construct and support an argument, regardless of what the actual content may be.

What courses require the CLT?

The Cambridge Law Test is sat only by applicants to the Law course at Cambridge University.

How is the CLT used?

Cambridge University uses the CLT as a standardised format for assessing and benchmarking their applicants. The exam rewards essay-writing skills and the ability to construct an argument over knowledge of anything relating to the law specifically. Cambridge  uses students’ marks in the CLT to help separate applicants with very similar grades. Cambridge invite a large proportion of their applicants to interview, and most of these students will have similarly impressive grades, so the CLT is used alongside the interview to help differentiate between similarly-qualified candidates.
