What is the Philosophy Test?

The Philosophy test is an admissions test used by Oxford University as part of the rigorous admission process for their undergraduate Philosophy and Theology Test. The test is designed to test a candidate’s philosophical reasoning skills without requiring any previous formal study of philosophy and its theories.

The Test is a 60-minute computer-based test. The test is normally split into two sections: part A is designed to test the applicant’s comprehension skills, and part B is designed to test essay-writing skills.

What courses require the Philosophy Test?

The Philosophy Test is mandatory for applicants to the Philosophy and Theology degree at Oxford University. Note that applicants for Philosophy, Psychology and Linguistics (PPL) or Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (PPE) are required to sit the TSA instead, whilst applicants for Philosophy and Modern Languages are required to sit the MLAT (which, if relevant, includes a philosophy test).

How is the Philosophy Test used?

Oxford University uses the Philosophy Test as a standardised format for assessing and benchmarking their applicants. The exam is not designed for students with any pre-existing knowledge or formal study of philosophy, but rather measures aptitude to study philosophical concepts, alongside assessing skills such as critical thinking and essay-writing.

Oxford uses students’ marks in the Philosophy Test to make decisions about which applicants they should invite to interview, giving them a further indicator in addition to predicted and achieved grades. Whilst the Philosophy Test is important in their selection processes, it is always used as part of a matrix and considered alongside other factors submitted with the application, such as predicted grades and personal statement.
