What is the ENGAA?

The ENGAA is a 2 hour exam designed to test various kinds of engineering abilities and skills which will be relevant to studying Engineering at university. The ENGAA is structured as follows: The test is divided into two main sections. The first section is a one-hour long multiple choice test consisting of 40 questions. Within this section, the first half of the questions are on Mathematics and Physics, whilst the second half of the questions are concerned with Advanced Mathematics and Advanced Physics. The second hour-long section of the exam consists of only 20 multiple choice questions on Advanced Physics. It is in this section that your ability to creatively apply the things you have learned to new knowledge and concepts is most likely to be tested. Note that calculators are not allowed in any section of the ENGAA.

What courses require the ENGAA?

Applicants for Engineering at Cambridge need to sit the ENGAA.

How is the ENGAA used?

Cambridge University uses the ENGAA as a standardised format for assessing and benchmarking their applicants. The exam rewards problem solving over specific engineering knowledge, so that students taking different qualifications at school can access the syllabus. Cambridge University uses students’ marks in the ENGAA to make decisions about which applicants they should invite to interview. Cambridge applicants for engineering are often all very successful in their school exams and will by applying with similarly high results, so an applicant’s ENGAA test score is very useful in influencing the university’s choice of who to short-list for interview.
