Michelle Obama recently gave a speech at the Democratic National Convention – which is already going down in history as a pivotal moment in the US presidential election.

The First Lady spoke for 15-minutes, talking passionately about the importance of choosing Hillary as president. Emphasising that voters should focus not on party lines of Democrat or Republican, Obama stated that voters must choose “who will have the power to shape our children for the next four or eight years of their lives.”

While not mentioning Donald Trump by name, Obama made it clear that she saw Clinton as the only option for President; “the issues a president faces are not black and white, and cannot be boiled down into 140 characters,” making reference to Trump’s infamous Twitter rants.

HSPS and PPE applicants should consider what this endorsement from Michelle Obama means; it is unusual for a First Lady to speak in a politically charged way about future elections, and this should be considered in light of Obama’s increasingly political acts through Barack Obama’s presidency.
