Later this month, the Jena Songbook will be analysed at one of the first conferences on the topic, hosted by the Oxford Modern Languages department. The Songbook is a fascinating collection of 91 songs, representing the largest musically notated collection of medieval German vernacular poetry. In 2007, a huge restoration project helped put the entire collection online, beautifully documented and explained here (albeit in German… but there are photos too). There are a handful of German medieval song manuscripts already online, which are a wonderful tool for Musicians, Historians and Modern and Medieval Languages students.
