Cambridge University Announces Online Interviews for December 2023

If you’re planning to apply to Cambridge University in the 2023-24 application cycle, then you’ll likely have been wondering for a while in what format your interview is likely to be held. Well, wait no longer! Cambridge University have just announced that interviews this year will be held mostly online, with only UK applicants interviewing at Gonville & Caius, King’s, Pembroke, Peterhouse, Selwyn, and Trinity Colleges being interviewed in person. The University has advised that applicants making an open application (i.e. an application in which they do not specify a preference of college) can be allocated to any college (with either online or offline interviews). Therefore, if you have a preference for online or in-person interviews, you should apply to a specific college accordingly.

The Difference between Online and Offline Interviews

Online and Offline interviews will require slightly different techniques and therefore preparation processes, with each kind of interview having its own benefits and drawbacks. For example, whilst interviewing at home mean that applicants won’t need to put in potentially hours of travelling, instead staying in a comfortable and familiar environment, for some interviewees finding a quiet space at home and getting into an academic mindset from home can be tricky compared to interviewing from within a Cambridge college or department itself. It is worth remembering, however, that tutors are still looking for the same academic attainment and passion regardless of the interview format, so any preparation you may have done so far will not be wasted!

Familiarity with the Format

Given the differences between the formats, it’s well worth taking note of what interview format the college you’re applying to is using and preparing accordingly. Whilst having good online or in-person interview technique is certainly less important than the actual content of your interview, if you’re going to prepare, you may as well make it as close as possible to the real thing. This is particularly the case for the setup of online interviews; make sure you’re well practised using a computer or laptop, have a quiet space in which to do it, and have any writing materials you may need to hand.

Preparation is Key

To excel in your online interviews, thorough preparation is crucial. While the format may be different from traditional face-to-face interviews, the fundamental principles remain the same. You should showcase your passion for your chosen subject, demonstrate critical thinking skills, and effectively communicate your thoughts. To assist you in your preparation, we have curated a comprehensive guide to online Oxbridge interviews. This guide covers various aspects of the interview process, including tips and tricks specific to the online format. It provides valuable insights on how to present yourself confidently, tackle challenging questions, and make a lasting impression on the interviewers.

The same goes for in-person interviews: be sure to practise face-to-face with friends, parents, or teachers to ensure that you’re comfortable sitting in a room with others and answering questions on the spot.
