***Please note that the BMAT has now been suspended and will not be used as an admissions test by either Oxford or Cambridge Universities for any courses. They will instead require the UCAT (University Clinical Aptitude Test) for their clinical courses. Click here to read our guide to the UCAT.***

BMAT Course

The BioMedical Admissions Test (BMAT) is an admissions exam designed to rank the applicants for medicine to certain UK universities to help admissions tutors separate excellent candidates from one another as part of the admissions test. We here at Oxbridge Applications are specialists in all-things Admissions Test, and offer a range of options to help you prepare for the BMAT, including bespoke BMAT courses, BMAT mock tests, and various free e-resources and guides to help promising applicants showcase the best of their abilities when it comes to sitting the real thing.

Our BMAT online courses and BMAT in-person courses include one-to-one admissions test tuition sessions with a test specialist using our own, bespoke mock test papers as supplementary resources to provide the best BMAT preparation course possible. Sessions are arranged according to your schedule and are completely flexible to fit in with your school, work, or other commitments. Our team of BMAT prep course tutors, all of whom have studied a medicine-related subject at either Oxford or Cambridge themselves, have an intimate understanding of the BMAT and what it takes to prepare well for what is, to many, a daunting admissions test.

It may be tempting to only study a BMAT crash course, but our years of experience has shown that steady preparation for the BMAT through a structured and one-to-one series of tuition is the best way to prepare for the test. In order to give you the best BMAT course to suit your needs, our packages range in number of sessions as well as their format (either online or in person) to give you complete control.

What is the BMAT?

The BMAT is made up of three sections in total. The first section is a 60-minute thinking skills test consisting of multiple choice questions designed to test general skills often required for undergraduate study. The second part is a half-an-hour section on Scientific Knowledge and Application. These questions are also in multiple choice format, and the questions are usually restricted to non-specialist Science and Mathematics courses in secondary education. The third section is a 30-minute writing task, in which students pick one out of three task prompts. This gives you the chance to demonstrate your ability to consider both sides of an argument and communicate your ideas in writing.

What courses require the BMAT?

The BMAT is for applicants to medicine, veterinary, and some dentist courses at eight different UK universities and medical schools: Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial, UCL, Leeds, Brighton & Sussex, Keele, and Lancaster.

How is the BMAT used?

Oxford and Cambridge use the BMAT as a standardised format for assessing and benchmarking their applicants. The exam rewards problem solving over any specific medical knowledge, so that students taking different qualifications at school can access the syllabus. Oxford and Cambridge use students’ marks in the BMAT to make decisions about which applicants they should invite to interview. The vast majority of applicants to Oxbridge have similarly excellent exam grades, making it very difficult to decide between them, and an applicant’s BMAT test score heavily influences this decision. Other universities use the BMAT score as additional content in their decision-making process for admissions to maths-based courses.
